5 Things That Frustrate Me When I’m Shopping


Stores excite me. Even if I’m not buying anything, I like to browse. However, there are certain things that drive me completely crazy and make the shopping experience a lot less enjoyable. I don’t mean things like a store not having my size or a dress in the colour I want. Those are annoying but they are not really anyone’s fault. I mean the things which can ruin the overall customer experience like…

Clothing with no price tag in sight and a worker who tells me what she “thinks” the price is

I’m not sure if this happens other places but Bajans will know what I mean if they go into some City stores. Does the top cost $45 today when Shakira is working but $55 tomorrow when Shanice is on duty? Inquiring minds want to know. Actually, we just want price tags. Please and thanks. (I don’t actually know any Shakiras and Shanices who work in the same store.)

Stores which are so packed with merchandise that you can’t see anything properly and you can barely find space to walk

Also, everything falls off the rack when you try to extricate one item or the hanger breaks. Don’t tell me this is because they want shoppers to have lots of options because if we can’t actually see the products, we can’t buy them. If we can’t make our way through the aisles, we’ll get frustrated and leave. Sure, some people will battle through but many won’t. Also, having so much clutter in a one-door shop is a fire hazard. We should all know better by now.

I appreciate you asking if you can help but if I say “no, thanks”, please give me my space. If I want something specific I’ll ask but sometimes I’m just looking to see if something catches my eye. Sometimes I’ll know what I want if I see it. Sometimes I need to go through a long thought process before I determine if I want to part with my cash. This is all quite uncomfortable if someone is right at my elbow. If theft is a concern, owners should install cameras.

The lack of proper dressing rooms

A “proper” dressing room has a (clean) full-length mirror, multiple hooks for hangers, and a door that closes, at a minimum. I’m also fine with a decent curtain. However, not having anywhere at all for shoppers to try clothes or sending them to a tiny “room” without a mirror is a no-no. Yes, even if I’m getting things “cheap”.

I know. I’m 5′ 0″ so a lot of things are out of reach for me. That’s why I’m willing to stand on tip-toe. But if that doesn’t work, I need to ask for assistance. If I want to look at multiple items but I’m not sure I’m going to buy, I feel like I’m bothering staff. It’s their job, but still . . . I’m all about ease. As far as possible, please put the merchandise within reach.
