The (Mis)adventures of Swimsuit Shopping
How many swimsuits do you try on before you find the perfect one? I tried six whole pieces before I found one I could live with. I like it but were I shopping for a dress or shoes, I might’ve tried a few more options before making a purchase. This was honestly one of the most frustrating shopping experiences I’ve had and I wanted it to be over.
I’m generally quite happy with my body and I’ve learned where to shop for small sizes that are actually my kind of small. I also know how to make slight alterations. But swimsuit shopping was a whole other story.
I’ve had the same two bikinis for a while. I don’t go to the beach often and when I do, I don’t usually go in the water. I’m also not into the party cruise scene. I, therefore, aborted all previous attempts to find a swimsuit because all looked too big, I didn’t like the patterns or I didn’t want to spend so much on something I would hardly wear.
Then I came across The Chic Addiction’s post on styling swimsuits beyond the beach and I rethought the whole idea. This time I was determined to make it happen. I thought my needs were simple enough: one piece but sexy and capable of being worn as a top so I can get some mileage. I expected some difficulty based on previous attempts but I don’t think I expected to be on the cusp of a meltdown.
Swimsuit Shopping Problems
These swimsuits were not about me and my wants and needs. One by one they seemed to suggest that my body was not proportioned “right” at all. My torso was too short, I was not big enough to fit into a small… Stress!
Many were too big. There was the one I couldn’t figure out how to put on. (It had like a million confusing skinny straps). There was one that got so awkwardly fitting that it was clear why it was in the bargain bin and would remain there forever. #lostcause
I was left wondering how every other woman seems to have found that perfectly fitting swimsuit. I see y’all on Instagram posed off making island life look like a perfect dream. Yet my shopping experience felt nightmarish.
In the end, I liked this one I got from Beyond Surf but I still think I could do better. I think I’ll just get one made next time. But if you’re petite like me and you find great options on a rack somewhere, help a sista out and drop the name of the store below!
Also, I think I’ll do a post with some tips on swimsuit shopping so if you have questions or suggestions, comment with those and I’ll try to include them.
