5 Ways to Style A Simple All-Black Outfit

There’s a lot you can do with an all-black outfit.

I’ve often preached about making the most out of your wardrobe instead of constantly buying new things when you’re stuck in a style rut.

That’s because few of us are truly taking advantage of the clothing and accessories we already own.

Here’s the thing, though. If you want to keep your spending in check and reduce waste, you need to find ways to make older pieces look fresh. You also need to know how to dress up your basics so they’re less basic.

Trust me. With the right styling techniques, no one will realise you’ve been wearing the same black top every week.

I think black is the most versatile colour. Not only can it be paired with virtually any other colour, but it can work for any setting or event.

However, if you prefer white, grey or another neutral, the tips presented here will work just as well. You can wear matching separates, a dress or a jumper as your base.

So let’s get into it!

Break Up the Black with a Belt

I’m partial to this SewLisa Rori belt because I love mixed prints and the fact that it’s not a traditional leather-like belt. However, you can also wear the usual animal prints, florals or bold solids. If you just want a subtle pop of color, opt for a skinny belt but if you really want your belt to be the focal point, the bigger the better. Look for chunky belts, belts with bows or even corset styles, depending on your personal preference.

Wear a Statement Necklace

When you have a simple black canvas, you can do as you please with jewellery. If you’re in the Caribbean, there’s no shortage of designers making African-inspired printed necklaces and in most cases, you can get them customised to suit your tastes. From single strands to multiple layers with all the embellishment you could want, no one will pay attention to the rest of your outfit. If that’s not your speed, simpler metallic pieces with hints of colour are an option.

Let Your Bag Do The Work

Bags are a great (and easy) way to add interest to all-black outfits. You can choose solid colors but I prefer a fun print like the one on this Navazoe crossbody. Tie-dyed bags like those offered by Ayissa Textile Designs would also look fabulous. Alternatively, you can get crafty and make your own or choose from thousands of options at all price points on Amazon.

Add a Fun Shoe to Your All-Black Outfit

Whether you’re a sneakers or a heels girl, shoes can do wonders for a simpleallblackk outfit. Actually, shoes can help you to wear the same outfit for multiple occasions. Colourful sandals and crisp white sneakers will look great for day but neon, printed or metallic heels can take the same outfit into night time. Don’t dismiss transparent styles for a minimal look.

Throw on an Impactful Scarf

This tip may seem like a no-brainer to people living outside the Caribbean but most us in warm climates don’t think about them as everyday accessories. Obviously, we need to choose light, breathable materials like linens if we’ll be outside. However, we tend to have the AC in offices on full blast so slightly heavier materials will be perfectly fine indoors.

Rock a Head Wrap or Hat

Never overlook headgear. Any piece of cloth you like can easily be turned into a head wrap (including the scarves I mentioned above). This is one of the easiest things you can do to jazz up a look. I’ve seen women use leggings to wrap so you are only bound by your imagination.

Side note: The outfit above is also an example of how interesting an all-black outfit can be when you’re wearing varying textures.

Do you have a preferred method for accessorising all-black outfits? Let me know in the comments.
